🏕 Important Updates to Trip Reports!

Hi Reader,

Well, I don't know how it is where you are, but I had to pull out my fall jacket for the first time yesterday, and that means we're approaching the end of another camping season.

As you already know, I run a Trip Reports website full of comprehensive trip reports for backcountry camping routes across Canada. This summer was perhaps the best summer I've ever had for new members joining, and I'm super grateful for that. With more funds coming in than I expected, I upgraded some website technology (so it should be even faster now) and made donations to "Friends Of" organizations that support the provincial parks covered on the website. I also decided to increase rates for trip report writers moving forward.

For trip reports moving forward, here is the compensation grid I'll be following:

I'm sending this email now because I'd like to invite you to write a trip report (or multiple) about a camping trip you did this summer. As always, there is a detailed template to follow, so the reports are pretty easy to write.

Trip reports are the heart of the site, sharing experiences from one camper to another. I also just love reading them, so the more the better!

If this is of interest to you, all of the information is available by clicking the button below. And feel free to forward this email if you know someone who would be interested!

I've included a little FAQ below if you'd like more information, or feel free to email me with questions.

Thank you and happy adventuring,

Mikaela

Some FAQs About Writing Reports

Why do you pay people to write reports?

Writing a trip report and sharing your experience is valuable and takes time, so I think it's only fair to compensate writers (that's what the membership fee on the website goes towards). If writing about your camping experiences means you can earn some extra money to upgrade your camping gear or cover permit fees, I call that a win!

What if I'm not a great writer?

Don't fret if you're not a great writer. There is a very structured template to follow, so you'll know exactly what to write. There are also tons of example reports. Before publishing, I go through every single report and check for accuracy, clarity and things like grammar and spelling.

Do I need to have photos of the trip?

Yes, you do need to have some photos from the trip. What's that saying... a picture is worth a thousand words? Whoever is reading your report will benefit from being able to see what you saw. Now, you don't need to be a professional photographer or have a nice camera. Phone pictures are great!

What kind of routes do you take?

We take canoeing, kayaking and backpacking trips throughout Canada. Routes must be at least 2 days long and can be in a park or on crown / public land. When you send your pitch, I'll review it to make sure we don't have the same route on the site and then you're good to start writing!

How does payment work?

Once you've submitted the report and I've reviewed it, I'll send you the payment either by e-transfer or PayPal, whichever you prefer. I typically send payment within 48 hours of receiving the report.

Other questions? Send me an email 😀

Hello Reader, I hope you're having a great day so far! Apologies for being two days late delivering my weekly email to you - I was travelling for work this week and it was much busier than I expected! I've often written that Killarney Provincial Park is one of my favourite places in Ontario (and one of the most beautiful as well). And it's no secret that securing a reservation here, especially in one of the more popular destinations, can feel like trying to snag tickets to a Taylor Swift...

Hello Reader, I hope you're having a great day so far! This isn't a new report (written about a trip from 2020, it's actually one of the oldest reports on the website) - but it happens to be one of my favourites. I absolutely love Temagami. It was the destination for my first real canoe trip, and I've loved revisiting it each time I've gone over the last 15 years. Temagami: Maple Mountain & The Old Growth Quick Facts 🛶 143 km over 14 days 🥾 13 portages (6.2 km total) + 6 km Maple Mountain...

Hello Reader, Welcome to the first day of May! Now that paddling season is upon us, I'm resuming my weekly newsletter showcasing lesser-known destinations - and lesser-known routes in popular destinations - for backcountry camping. We'll start this series with the Nipissing River. Although it stretches some ~100 km through Algonquin Park, the Nipissing River contains some of the park's least frequently travelled sections. So if you want Algonquin, but want to avoid the craziness of Hwy 60,...
